Sherri Keller changed the description of the group Music Appreciation from “The Music Appreciation Group meets in members’ homes on the 1st Tuesday of every month from 1-3pm. We are an intimate group whose members share a love of music.
Each fall members bring a favourite CD to play for each other. We begin each monthly session with a roundtable discussion, where each member shares a memorable music experience that they have had in the past month, be it concert, opera or other live entertainment. Members choose topics to present at the monthly sessions.

At the meetings playlists of the upcoming season are read and discussed. There are sign-up sheets for each play selected. Members sign-up for plays of their choice, suggest a preferred date and indicate whether they are willing to drive. Drivers -receive carpool payments directly from the members before the performance Callers – one per play – volunteer to select a final date, inquire about ticket prices, call those on the sign-up sheet to confirm that they are still planning to attend the play, and suggest car pools. Once a member commits by phone – or email – she is responsible for the ticket cost. Members are responsible for paying the caller promptly so that she can order the tickets without delay. We have attended plays, both professional and amateur, in Toronto, Oakville, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Hamilton, Burlington, Dundas and Waterdown. In December and May, a dinner and theatre event is planned. New members are always welcome! At a meeting at the end of September, interested members begin to select the books. Other members can make suggestions. We are looking for good reads that most members will find interesting. Each member contributes around $30, depending on the cost of the books. She reads one of the 8 to 10 books, every month, depending on the number of members. She keeps the last book she receives. Each member has her first book by November 1. New members are always welcome! We spend about half an hour socializing over coffee/tea and dessert and the rest of the time discussing the book. Each member chooses the book she would like to present. Each of us has our own method of presenting: most will talk a little about the author’s background, give us some idea of what the critics thought of the book, and go on to discuss main literary features of the book, the historical background or the issues that arise from the book; but the emphasis is always on getting everyone involved in the discussions and that is the most important role of the facilitator. We try to review books that are in paperback, more current / readily available in local libraries as an e-book or in hard copy – but that’s not always the case, and no genre is excluded. We currently have an 8 member limit for this group so anyone interested in getting on our waiting list is welcome to contact Jan at janhillyer@hotmail.com
