  • Proposal – admit non members to cycling and golf groups

    I propose that groups such as the cycling and golf groups which meet when CFUW is not in session (during the months of June – September) in venues which are open to the public be allowed and even encouraged to admit participants wo are not currently members of CFUW.

    Ratonal;

    It is difficult to deny participation to anyone when we are using public property such as the Waterfront trail (n the case of the cyclists)

    At least for the cycling group, last year our regular members dwindled to four. It is possible that the group might no longer be viable unless some non members swell its ranks so that it could still be offered to the club for those who have only a casual interest in the group

    Non members might be encouraged to be come members.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Eleanor Christie: CFUW Executive Response:

    CFUW Burlington runs from June 1st to May 31st.  It is a group’s decision to meet over the summer.

    The Constitution of CFUW Burlington covers this issue quite extensively:

    Under Section 2- Bylaws

    Article 1:(6) Guests who are eligible for membership are permitted to attend no more than 2 meetings (this includes interest group meetings) annually, before becoming full paying members

    Article 3: (9b) The Interest group Convenor shall ensure that all members of these(interest) groups are paid up members of the club

    Article 6: (1) Participation in Interest Groups is open to members in good standing

    Artcile: 9: (4) All members of Interest Groups must be Club Members in Good Standing

    Therefore, if the cycling group wishes to invite non-members to participate in their summer rides, then it can no longer be an official CFUW Interest Group.

    The Golf Group participants are all members of CFUW and golf as an official CFUW Group at their current golf club.

    Deleted user: Thanks, Eleanor – that clarifies things.  As I emailed to Helen, I don’t wish to convene this group next year as there are just not enough interested members within the club to make it run the way I would wish.  There will probably still be a Wednesday a.m. ladies’ cycling group to which anyone can belong but it cannot not be part of CFUW as you explained.  However, if anyone else wants to convene another CFUW cycling group – maybe on a different day and/or with easier or slower or shorter rides, that would be fine.Joan
