Dr. David Galbraith – Royal Botanical Gardens: History, Programs, Volunteers

David Galbraith is an ecologist and wildlife biologist with wide-ranging interests in conservation, cultural heritage, science, and the arts.

He grew up in Kitchener-Waterloo and earned:

  • B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Guelph
  • Ph.D. from Queen’s University
  • Joined the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) in 1995 to develop conservation projects aligned with the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.
  • Became head of RBG’s science department in 2006, overseeing collections, supporting external researchers, and managing projects like the Cootes to Escarpment EcoPark System.
  • Named Hamilton Environmentalist of the Year in 2012.

Dr David Galbraith currently leads RBG’s science communications program, sharing research and restoration results. Has led RBG initiatives in archaeology, cultural heritage, and First Nations engagement. He serves as an adjunct biology professor at McMaster University, and has been recognized as a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and a Fellow International of the Explorers Club.
